Dr. Bern Kreissman is the author of several literary monographs and the highly acclaimed and frequently cited California, An Environmental Atlas & Guide, which won a national award in 1993. A former university library administrator and UNESCO consultant to the Universidad de Oriente, Venezuela,, he has been a lifelong conservationist. He is presently an elected representative to the National Council of Leaders of the Sierra Club and a "Leave No Trace" Master of the National Outdoor Leadership School. He is a backpack and snowshoe leader and guide and he has snowshoed in the mountains of the northeast with old-time wood frame shoes and in the Sierra with the new hi-tech metal/plastic snowshoes. His backpacking experience began in his early teens, pre-nylon, pre-plastic, pre-frame pack days, and he has tramped the American wilderness areas of the east and the west.
