We've all heard the story about Paul Revere's midnight ride, most from the poetic retelling by Longfellow. But what really happened on that April night so long ago?Our story begins when Janie and Johnnie Parker receive a magic charm from Grandfather Carter. He tells them how he got the pendant from a mysterious man in Baghdad years before, when he sailed the seven seas. He was told it held wonderful powers if only one would unleash them. Alas for Grandfather, he never found out how.
Upstairs the children try and try to unleash the powers using words like Abracadabra, Allakazam and Ali Baba. Finally Janie gives up with an Ali POO! Suddenly before them stands a strange-looking little person – dressed in silken pantaloons, a shirt of bright colors, and a turban. It's Ali Poo – their own special pint-sized genie.
After proving his authenticity, Ali Poo confesses he isn't very good with magic tricks – much to his grandfather's dismay. (His grandfather had attended to Aladdin.) He does promise Janie and Johnnie a trip in time on his computerized flying carpet.
That very same evening, Johnnie, like all of us at one time, has been trying to learn by heart "The Ride of Paul Revere." What could help him more than being right there?
So off they go on an exciting adventure that has them climbing up the steeple of the Old North Church, munching a snack at the Reverend Clark's with Paul Revere himself and John Hancock, and flying all over Boston with Ali Poo.
Two If By Sea or The Magic of Three is a rollicksome story that is smattered with surprising twists and historical facts and enough fantasy to delight any child.
